THE BAKE SHOP
Maeve chuckled as she fumbled for the key to unlock the front door of Maeve’s Mostly Marvelous. Although hardly anyone now asked, “Mostly Marvelous, WHAT?” The response of “Why, whatever’s here, of course!” always made her chuckle. Still smiling to herself, she set the faded spell book carefully on the counter and opened it’s somewhat yellowed pages. Ah! There it was! She had high hopes for this latest attempt. She would dearly love just a bit more sleep in the mornings, and this would certainly help. As much as she loved running her own bakery shop, getting up so early just wasn’t her thing.
Mixing the ingredients, she took a deep breath, added just a pinch of bluong root, and chanted the brief rhyme.
“Rising fast…rising well…be the best bread…that ye may sell!”. Lowering her arms she stepped back to wait. Just then she heard the rattle of keys in the lock, turning she blinked. “Janie? What are you doing here? Is everything alright at home?”
“Of course, sweetheart. But you forgot your lunch again.” Her partner responded gaily, holding out a small basket. “You know you shouldn’t work all day without food, it makes you grumpy. You know how…” she paused sniffing loudly. “Oh my, that smells marvelous! You truly have a knack for this. Be sure to bring some home, dear.”
“Oh of course.” Smiling fondly Maeve blew her a kiss. “And thank you so much for the food. You spoil me!”
“Not at all, sweetie. Well, I suppose I should get back, the garden isn’t going to water itself!” With a wink and a sidelong glance, Jane swept out the door, closing it gently behind her.
Turning, Maeve smiled happily at the sight of several perfectly risen bread loaves. It was going to be a great day!

THE POTION
As the witch picked her way carefully through the edge of the forest, she thought to herself for about the hundredth time I wish I had never agreed to this. Her mentor had told her several times “always know what will be needed, before you agree to make something”. But, who could have guessed that some of the ingredients for the requested Potion of Clear Sight would be so devilishly hard to find. She seethed inwardly at her client’s impatience. Hey buddy, you try collecting owl saliva under a full moon and see how long it takes YOU! She sighed, and then froze. Fortunately, the owl hadn’t heard and was still perched on the same low branch overlooking the meadow. Praying that a mouse wouldn’t suddenly appear, she carefully cast her previously prepared capture spell. There was a brief shimmer in the air and the bird froze in place. She hurried forward and collected her sample, breathing a sigh of relief. Only one ingredient left!
Back in her workroom, she chuckled aloud. If that pompous jerk knew that human urine was one of the ingredients in his precious potion, he would probably have a stroke. Picking up the tiny crystal vial needed for the collection, she thought to herself ironically, this is about the only thing that actually would have been easier were I still a man.
Ingredients finally collected, she began the much simpler task of combining them in the correct order in the required brass bowl, Happy that several months of work were complete and tomorrow she could finally collect her fee.
